How to experience Horizontal Falls with kids.

A tour of Horizontal Falls is one of the most exciting things to experience in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. Firstly, the falls are an incredible demonstration of the massive tides that the area is world renown for. Secondly, the majestic red cliffs create a stunning backdrop to this remote, wilderness area. Thirdly, the falls are one of the greatest wonders of the natural world!

Our Broome Full Day Tour Details.

We were picked up from our accomodation bright and early.

The day began at 5am, with a mammoth sized 4WD truck collecting our family from Cable Beach Caravan Park. We enjoyed a stop for morning tea at the Beagle Bay church. It has been artistically decorated with thousands of pearl shells. It’s an amazing building, when you consider the remoteness and isolation of the small village.

Cape Leveque & Kooljaman.

The next stop was the pristine white beaches of Cape Leveque. This is where stunning ochre red cliffs meet the azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean. After strolling along the beach, we head to ‘Kooljaman’ the nearby wilderness camp, for a delicious breakfast.

A visit to One Arm Point.

The One Arm Point Aquaculture Hatchery tour is a highlight for everyone. We had the chance to give a turtle a scratch on his back. We also saw black and orange clown fish up close and many other local sea creatures. The tour guide was really engaging and really funny too!

Next, we flew over the awe inspiring islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago, before landing in the tranquil waters of Talbot Bay, the home of Horizontal Falls.

Next, an exciting landing in Talbot Bay and arrival at the luxury houseboat.

A luxury houseboat awaits with a Barramundi BBQ lunch and an opportunity to get up close and personal with the resident tawny nurse sharks of Talbot Bay. You can jump into a cage, giving you an amazing view of the sharks coming in for their own barramundi feed!

Then, all aboard the fast boat “Full Throttle”

Before we all sat down together to devour lunch, we strapped on our lifejackets and jumped aboard “Full Throttle’. It’s an impressive fast boat with 3 x 300 horsepower Yamaha engines, purposely designed to have the capacity to power through the Horizontal Falls.

The kids thought the speed boat rides were absolutely amazing, especially when it squeezed through the 7 metre gap of the falls. The skipper was skilled and an absolute professional at all times.

Gentle boat cruising.

In addition to the action packed boat rides through the falls, we also took a cruise around the peaceful bays and creeks nearby. Everyone had their eyes peeled for a saltwater crocodile, however no one saw any on this day. The tour guide showed us the unique rock formations of the Kimberleys and we learnt a lot about the geology of the area.

Flyover Broome & surrounds.

After multiple exhilarating fast boat rides through the Horizontal Falls, it was time to board the sea plane for the return flight. The day ended perfectly, with a low level flight over the township of Broome and surrounding areas.

Family friendly crew.

The full day tour was perfect for us because of the age of our kids (12 & 9). If you have younger children, I would suggest you hold off until they are bigger and can really appreciate the wonder of Horizontal Falls. Also, kids need to be a minimum of four years old. The crew were wonderful with our kids and we felt completely safe at all times. It was an experience we will never, ever forget.

A Horizontal Falls tour needs to go on your bucket list!
