Ten weeks in Tasmania and we are done…for now.

Our time in Tasmania is almost up and there is still so much we haven’t seen! We leave Launceston, Tasmania’s second largest city, head for the North coast and stay in caravan parks for the week. Shocking, we know!

The Good Bits.

Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre was a hit with the whole family. The kids learnt a lot about the gold mine and the techniques used “in the olden days”. We all gained a better understanding of the tragedy and triumph that happened at the site in 2006, where three men became trapped when the mine shaft collapsed.

Port Sorell is located at the North Western part of the state. We chose to stay at the Port Sorell Caravan Park, which is conveniently located right on the beach and has one of the best, well stocked camp kitchens we’ve ever seen. The camp kitchen is fully enclosed and features heating, a television, sofas, table & chairs, microwaves, stovetops and every plate, saucepan and utensil you could ever need. It is also in sight of the childrens playground, a must for any family.

We used this caravan park for our final nights in Tasmania as it was only a 25 minute drive from where the Spirit of Tasmania departs.

Devonport is the port town where the Spirit of Tasmania docks. It has a great foreshore walk, plenty of pubs, antique shops and markets on the weekends.

House of Anvers Chocolate is a must for the serious chocolate lover. The house combines chocolate history with arguably the best chocolate made in Tasmania.

A warning for travellers : There is a fruit fly exclusion zone in place and any fruit and vegetables you purchase in Devonport (within the zone), will need to be eaten or disposed of correctly when you leave the zone. Tasmanian authorities are doing all they can to prevent the spread and we have personally met travellers who have been been pulled over at a checkpoint and had to throw out their newly purchased groceries from town. It is vitally important to stop the spread, as fruit fly has a devastating impact on the environment and local producers.

The Cream.

Greens Beach is a sleepy holiday hamlet and ideal for kicking back and relaxing on our last week of our journey on Australia’s biggest island. We really wanted to check out the nearby Big4 Caravan Park but dogs were not welcome. Our Big4 Membership card is still unused.

Greens Beach Caravan Park is directly across from the beach, backs onto a golf course and is pet friendly. Adam was so inspired, out came the golf clubs for the first time on our big lap. We were so glad we found this place, the facilities were clean and the caretaker was wonderful with our children.

That was our Tenth and last week!

Thanks for having us, Tassie!
