The New Australian Dream?

Travel Australia before you hit retirement age! Are you ready to unplug your current existence and take the plunge?

One thing we know for sure is that our home, Australia, is a magical place.

It is an ancient land, carved out over millions of years and with an indigenous culture that originated 40,000 years ago. It is wild in its beauty and has more natural World Heritage listed sites than any other country on the planet. These places include Uluru – Kata Tjuta National Park, the Great Barrier Reef, the Tasmanian Wilderness, the Ningaloo Coast, Fraser Island, the Greater Blue Mountains and the Wet Tropics of Queensland.

We reckon there is no better way to discover the raw beauty of Australia than a driving holiday.

Whether you’re on or off the black top, you’ll see some of the most breath taking landscapes on the planet. When you escape from the capital cities, the country begins to unravel and reveal diverse national parks, stunning coastlines and gorgeous towns.

The ultimate Australian road trip is well known as “the big lap”.

There are numerous Facebook groups dedicated to like minded people who are planning or sharing their experiences of their own Aussie lap. They’re not striving for a new house, the latest entertainment systems or renovating. They’ve abandoned the treadmill of work and suburban life to travel around Australia.

Here are some Facebook groups we love –

“It is the new Australian dream and we are living it.”

Imagine the excitement and anticipation in the lead up to the ultimate road trip?

It is 100 times more crazy as you begin to not only pack a suit case but you need to make decisions about all of your worldly possessions. For us, it felt like the perfect opportunity to embrace minimalism and we either donated or sold most of our things in the few months before we left.

Life is simpler now.

It costs far less to the live on the road and explore our incredible and vast country than it does to exist in suburbia. We prefer to free camp off grid so it costs us absolutely nothing for accomodation.  We don’t have an electricity or water bill. Our caravan set up enables us to be completely self sufficient and we never need to plug into the grid.

Spend money on the things you love.

The majority of us prefer to spend money on experiences and its about to get even easier to hit the road in a caravan or camper trailer. The NSW Government has decided to reduce the registration cost by 40 per cent for privately owned caravans and camper trailers weighing up to 4.5 tonnes. How great is that?! Visit rms.nsw.gov.au for more information.

What if your next road trip is a driving holiday to a regional area in Australia?

You’ll be providing an opportunity to contribute to the domestic economy, pumping money into communities and towns that embrace travellers and need the boost. Your next road trip will contribute over $58 billion to the Australian economy, with two-thirds being invested into regional centres.

Our big lap is the most epic school excursion ever!

The kids are receiving a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore our own country and are learning valuable life lessons that they can only receive from this experience. Not only do they learn about places like Uluru and the Tasmanian wilderness, they get to feel them too.

“The new Australian dream is the journey and the destination.”
