Tasmania’s North West Coast

If you’re planning to visit Tasmania and you love wild, unspoilt pieces of paradise and you’re self sufficient, then you NEED to visit the West Coast. Just pack more food than you’ll think you need so you don’t run low and have to leave like we did! We begrudgingly pulled up stumps from Couta Rocks and starting making our way North. We were ready to discover Tasmania’s North West region.

The Good Bits.

We based ourselves at River Breeze Caravan Park in Smithton and took a day trip to Stanley, home of The Nut. The town is known for its steep ancient volcanic plug, which you can walk or take a chairlift up to the top. We skipped the lift as we are young and able and we thought the price of the lift was a little over the top for us ($30 one way, $45 return for a family). Once you reach the summit, there is a lovely circuit to walk amongst the dynamic flora. You can expect to immerse yourself in spectacular panoramic views of the Bass Strait and the surrounding farmland. Luckily for us, we completed the walk before several coaches pulled in with bucket loads of people. It is a lovely town with many historical sites to discover.

Rocky Cape National Park has striking geology. It features sharp rocks which jut out of the sandy coast. When camping at Granville Harbour a few weeks before, we met locals from Rocky Cape, Carol and Dave.  They generously let us set up our van on their 10 acres of lawn. We were treated with beautiful Australian hospitality, including beers and golden syrup dumplings. Yummo!

The Creamy Bits.

Boat Harbour is on the list of 101 Best Australian Beaches and once you have experienced it for yourself, you’ll understand why. Incredibly clear water and white sand make it a suitable for snorkelling and diving. We visited on a Tasmanian Public Holiday and there were only a small amount of people on the beach. Be sure to pack your wetsuit if you’d like to stay in for a snorkel as the water here is notoriously cold!

So, that was our EIGTH week in Tasmania, only TWO more weeks to go!
