Hobart and beyond.

It was time to leave the Tasman Peninsula and make our way towards Hobart. Little did we know, we were all in for a real treat this week. We departed camp in the morning with a direction and no plan about where to lay our heads in the evening. This is exactly how we like it. Unscripted is our travel motto.

The Good Bits.

This week, we ventured into MONA – Museum of Old and New Art. Located close to Hobart, its features some amazing artwork and there is a fair amount of crap there too. However, Art is in the eye of the beholder and the girls enjoyed it a lot, whereas the boys stated that they would rather stab themselves in the eye than endure an art gallery like that again! We all agreed that the architecture of the building is mind blowing and it is still worth visiting as this entire structure is built underground.

We did loads of touristy activities, including Salamanca Markets, Hobart Wharf precinct and Mount Wellington. Adam scored a second hand Driza Bone for a bargain price at Recycled Recreation Tasmania. It is located at 96 Elizabeth Street, Hobart. If you’re after some hiking gear and don’t mind if it is pre loved, this place is worth a look.

Adam was stoked to score permission from a farmer to hunt on his property this week. The farmer had a rabbit problem and they were attracting venomous snakes amongst the fruit trees and strawberry fields. When we visited the farm, our son nearly stepped on a Tiger snake whilst picking strawberries. Eeeewwweee!

The Cream.

We discovered this week’s camp at Primrose Sands after stopping by the fruit farm and chatting with a local from the area. She spoke of a pristine beach, surrounded by eclectic beachside shacks and glorious sunsets over the sea. She was right, what a hidden gem! The beach was perfect for a float in the sea and did we mention the sunsets? We had a really cool, random encounter with an echidna at the local skate park and enjoyed a yummy meal at the local RSL Club.

Behind the scenes.

Both children are enrolled in Distance Education. Our son is in Year 5 and our daughter is in Year 3. The workload is quite intense. This week, we spent more than 30 hours inside the caravan doing school work. Children in normal classrooms miss out of this type of one on one intensive learning. We can definitely see an improvement in their skill level as we sit through each task until it is completely understood. The jury is still out, if this is the right way for us as a Lapping Oz family.

So, that was our FOURTH week in Tasmania, only SIX more weeks to go!
